This explains it all. In a new Pew Poll 81% of Trump supporters say that life was better 50 years ago, than it is today. So let's understand exactly what they're saying. According to Trump supporters life was better in the United States when
* Racial discrimination was rampant and, in many places legal
* Sex discrimination was rampant and in many places legal
* We were losing many soldiers each week in a war that would eventually claim 58,000 lives
* We were drafting tens of thousands of men each year
* We were living under the threat of annihilation from the Soviet Union
* We were losing three times as many people in auto deaths per miles driven as we are today
* Many of our lakes and rivers and waterways were so polluted as to be unusable
* Air pollution was rendering many of our major cities almost uninhabitable
* Thousands of women were dying from back alley abortions
* The average life expectancy was substantially lower less than it is today
* And the list could go on and on and on
The United States was not by any measure a better country in 1966 than it is today. But that is the America that Trump supporters appear to long for and Trump is trying to sell with his goofy hats.
They don't realize what a wise gentleman once said to me, "the good old days, the good old days, may they never come back."
Edit made to correctly reflect that fifty years ago was 1966, not 1968. Where’s that damn proofreader?
